Celebrate Wild Winter African Adventure in honor of Black History Month. Take an African drum lesson or learn about African animals through storytelling with David Gakure, Kenyan naturalist and Detroit Zoo Education Specialist. Follow the Drinking Gourd is a historical program discussing how African-American slaves used the stars - mainly the stars of the Big Dipper - to find their way north to freedom. Participants will learn the song they memorized to assist them in their trip. We will also hear the tale of one African-American family and their successful journey north to freedom. The Ann Arbor Art Center is proud to be partnering with Whole Foods Markets and their Whole Planet Foundation to offer Whole Planet-Artful Dreams of Peace Workshops. Guided by professional artists/instructors, participants will create artwork for the Global Art Project representing their vision for peace. A variety of media and repurposed materials will be used to create artwork which will be displayed at the Ann Arbor Whole Foods Markets’ Art That Is Local Gallery, and will then be part of the Global Art Project. Drum Me a Story is a delightful, humorous collection of well-known African tales including “Anansi and the Moss Covered Rock” and “How the Turtle Got Its Shell,” performed by the Wild Swan troupe through storytelling, acting and drumming. As part of the performance, Jaclyn Morrow, who has studied drumming for years, will demonstrate her many drums and teach the audience about them.

This two-hour program will help teach children about pet responsibility, learn how to make dog treats, play games and participate in a scavenger hunt. Students will make kennel cards for the homeless animals and take a behind the scenes tour of the Toledo Area Humane Society facility. There will also be plenty of time to cuddle with a few of our furry friends. All proceeds benefit the animals of the Toledo Area Humane Society. Register online or in person.
